Welcome to Caliper! This guide will help you get started with AI-powered assessment in just 10 minutes.

Step 1: Log In to Caliper
- Navigate to https://caliper.restrat.co.za
- Enter your username and password
- Click Log In
If you don't have credentials yet, contact your school administrator or email info@restrat.co.za
Step 2: Understand Your Dashboard
After logging in, you'll see your Teacher Dashboard with:

- Classes: View all your classes and student enrollment
- Assignments: Manage all assignments across classes
- Submissions: Track student submissions and marking progress
- AI Marking: Access AI-powered marking tools
- Rubrics: Create and manage marking criteria
🚀 Quick Actions
- + New Assignment: Create an assignment quickly
- Fast Mark: Mark multiple submissions rapidly
- PAT Management: Manage multi-phase PAT assessments
Step 3: Create Your First Class
Before creating assignments, set up a class:
- Click Classes in the sidebar
- Click + Create New Class
- Fill in the details:
- Class Name: e.g., "Grade 10 IT 2025"
- Subject: Select your subject (IT/CAT)
- Grade Level: Choose the grade
- Click Create Class
You can add students to your class later from the Class Detail page
Step 4: Create a Simple Assignment
Now let's create your first assignment:
Click Assignments in the sidebar
Click + Create New Assignment
Fill in the assignment details:
- Title: e.g., "Python Basics - Variables"
- Description: Brief overview of what students should submit
- Due Date: Set the deadline
- Max Points: e.g., 50
- Assign to Class: Select your class
- Submission Format: Choose PDF, ZIP, or other format
Click Create Assignment
Step 5: Create a Simple Rubric (Optional but Recommended)
Rubrics help AI understand how to mark submissions:
Navigate to Rubric Management
Click + Create New Rubric
Enter basic details:
- Name: e.g., "Python Variables Rubric"
- Description: Brief overview
Add marking criteria:
- Click + Add Criterion
- Enter criterion name: e.g., "Variable Declaration"
- Set points: e.g., 10
- Add description: "Student correctly declares variables"
Click Save Rubric
Use the AI Rubric Creator to generate rubrics from assignment documents or screenshots!
Step 6: Link Rubric to Assignment
- Go back to your Assignment (Assignments → Click on your assignment)
- Click ✏️ Edit Assignment
- In the Assessment Rubric dropdown, select your rubric
- Click Save Changes
Step 7: Wait for Student Submissions
Students can now:
- Log in to their learner accounts
- View the assignment in My Assignments
- Upload their work before the deadline
You can create a test student account or use the Submission Management page to manually upload test files
Step 8: Mark with AI Assistance
Once submissions arrive:
- Navigate to Assignments → Click on your assignment
- You'll see a list of submissions
- Click Mark Submission on any submission
AI Marking Process
Review the Submission: View the student's uploaded file
Click "AI Mark" button
Wait for Analysis: AI reads the submission using your rubric
Review AI Suggestions:
- Check the suggested score
- Read AI-generated feedback
- Review criterion-by-criterion breakdown
Adjust if Needed:
- Modify scores using the override fields
- Add your own comments
- Make final adjustments
Save & Submit: Click Save Marking
For large classes, use Fast Mark to mark multiple submissions in rapid succession with keyboard shortcuts!
Step 9: View Student Progress
Monitor your class performance:
- Go to Dashboard for overview statistics
- Visit Classes → [Your Class] for class-specific analytics
- Check Submissions for detailed submission tracking
Key Metrics
- Submission Rate: Percentage of students who submitted
- Average Score: Class performance average
- AI vs Teacher Scores: Compare AI suggestions with your final marks
Step 10: Export and Report
Generate reports for parents or administrators:
- Navigate to Data Management
- Click Export Data
- Choose what to export:
- Class grades (Excel/CSV)
- Rubrics (YAML/JSON)
- Full backup (ZIP)
