Rubrics are the foundation of consistent, fair assessment in Caliper. Learn how to create rubrics that enable accurate AI marking while maintaining educational standards.

What is a Rubric?

A rubric is a structured scoring guide that:

Creating Your First Rubric

Step 1: Access Rubric Management

  1. Navigate to Rubric Management in sidebar
  2. Click + Create New Rubric
  3. Choose creation method:
    • Manual Creation: Build from scratch
    • AI Rubric Assistant: Generate from documents
    • Template: Use pre-built structure

Step 2: Basic Information

Rubric Name

  • Be specific and descriptive
  • Include assignment type or topic
  • Example: "Python Functions Assessment"

Description

  • Summarize what the rubric assesses
  • List main competencies evaluated
  • Example: "Assesses function creation, parameters, return values, and documentation"

Rubric Type

  • Standard: Criterion-based marking
  • PAT: Multi-phase IEB assessments
  • Custom: Specialized evaluation

Step 3: Define Criteria

Each criterion should have:

Criterion Name

  • Clear, specific skill or requirement
  • Student-friendly language
  • Example: "Function Definition Syntax"

Point Value

  • Allocate points based on importance
  • Ensure total matches assignment max points
  • Balance across criteria

Description

Tell AI what to look for:

Good Example:
"Student correctly defines functions with proper syntax:
- Uses 'def' keyword
- Includes function name
- Has parameter list in parentheses
- Ends with colon
- Indents function body"

Poor Example:
"Function is correct"

Detailed Levels (Optional)

Define performance tiers:

  • Excellent (80-100%): Exceeds expectations
  • Good (60-79%): Meets requirements
  • Needs Improvement (40-59%): Partially complete
  • Incomplete (0-39%): Major issues

Guide feedback tone:

Provide encouraging feedback. Highlight what worked well
before suggesting improvements. Use student-friendly language.
